John Lennon and Paul McCartney created unforgettable melodies that helped define music of the 1960s. Trumpeter Kim Pensyl joins the Phil DeGreg Trio in re-imagining some of their classic songs as instrumental jazz pieces. The arrangements lend a new jazz twist to familiar melodies.
Internationally-known jazz pianist Phil DeGreg is a Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and for 16 years, served as the house pianist at Cincinnati’s famous Blue Wisp Jazz Club. Phil has performed in clubs and concerts throughout the United States, and in the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Brazil, and released eleven jazz recordings. In 2008 Phil was awarded a four month Fulbright Fellowship to lecture about jazz in Brazil.
Also, on view in the Lindner Gallery will be a selection from Homage to a Sound by Melvin Grier. The exhibition pays tribute to the wonderful world of Jazz with performance and behind-the-scenes photographs of musicians at renowned Cincinnati venues.
This is the first in a two-concert Summer Jazz Series benefiting Kennedy Heights Arts Center. Also see Mambo Combo on August 25th!
