Teen Artists for Change (TAC) is a club for diverse young artists in grades 7-12, who want to use their creative skills to make an impact in their community. TAC provides outlets for teens to work together to plan and implement creative projects that matter to them. Mentored by professional artists, teens develop skills and express their voices through community art projects such as exhibits, public art installations, and films.

TAC meets weekly on Saturdays from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, producing three projects in collaboration with professional artists throughout the year. Teens will explore and utilize various forms of art-making such as photography, video production, creative writing, drawing and painting, and digital design. We will accept new members at the beginning of each term (Fall, Winter, Spring) and require that students commit to the full term.

For the spring 2023 session, we will be partnering with artist Cedric Michael Cox to create colorful and meaningful mural! Below is a small excerpt from Cedric’s artist statement, “The paintings and drawings I create are intended to build bridges between the past, present, and future for both individuals and ALL groups of people, through stylistic ideas and expressions that crossover into many genres. Historically, my interest in art draws from cubism at the beginning of the 20th century. In contemporary terms, I have been noted to create images that relate to elements of urban architecture, highlighting areas of the city in which I lived and worked.”  To learn more about Cedric and view his work, visit his website, cedricmichaelcox.com.

In this eight week workshop, teens will work together with Cedric to create a large-scale mural in the KHAC basement studio. The basement studio is a space that serves the Kennedy Heights community as it has welcomed students from 5-90 years old. To add color and enhance the space for creativity as murals are just the things to inspire every student who walks through the door! Participants will work to develop ideas and designs that reflect issues that are meaningful to them and find dynamic ways to translate thoughts and feels through visual language.

Due to generous support from the Charles H. Dater Foundation, participation in Teen Artists for Change is offered at no cost.

All participants need to complete and submit an Emergency Contact and Photo Release. Completed forms can be emailed to sarah@kennedyarts.org or dropped off in-person at KHAC.
