Kennedy Heights Arts Center’s second artist-in-residence of 2022, Jennifer Cox, invites community members to collaboratively explore how art and design can be used to create more inviting, inclusive and welcoming spaces.

Jennifer Cox owns and operates Make.Do., a community-focused creative retail space offering yarn, fabric and textiles for purchase, and providing classes onsite and at the Cincinnati Public Library, Civic Garden Center and Kennedy Heights Arts Center. She has 15+ years’ experience as knitter, crocheter, textile artist and quilter, and uses that to deliver an engaging and inspiring experience for clients and drive connections among makers of color in and around the greater Cincinnati metropolitan area.

From May 2-28, Jennifer will be co-creating and installing a series of outdoor installations at the Arts Center that offer welcoming spaces for convening, creating and connecting. She envisions that space as being community-designed, using local Black artists to fashion the palettes, the materials, and the flow of the space.

“There is a real difference between being welcoming and being humble enough to offer an invitation,” remarked Jennifer. “That humility is a signal to the community that you are invited and that you will be valued and appreciated in a space that exists to celebrate and support your creative pursuits.”

This space — created by the community, for the community — will be presented at a special Community Day celebration on Saturday, May 28 from 11am – 3pm. (Rain date is May 29).

You are invited to be a part of the project!

Jen will be offering a series of workshops for adults and youth ages 8+ to help create custom fabric, seating, rugs and décor for our outdoor community spaces. Participation is free, but registration is required.
