The statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee became a flashpoint for protest in the days and months following the death of George Floyd, who died in custody of Minneapolis police has become a symbol and often a rallying point for social justice seekers. The scene on Monument Avenue in Richmond, VA on Friday, November 6, 2020 stands in stark contrast to the recent past as some played basketball and residents walked their dogs nearby. Richmond Police still maintain a vehicle barrier limiting access to the circle. The Lee statue is the lone remaining sculpture honoring Civil War Confederate leaders.
