Community Engagement Workshop with Batres Gilvin

Join artist collaborative Batres Gilvin in creating a community engaged artistic project titled “A Community Altar of Transition.” They will introduce the exhibition Entre Lo Que Fue y Lo Que Es (Between What Was and What Is) and discuss the role of memory, grief, family history, cultural identity, and transformation within the work. Participants will learn about the artists’ use of repurposed Styrofoam and its connection to both Mexican decorative traditions and the exhibition’s themes of transition and renewal.

By reflecting and responding to a series of prompts, participants will use Styrofoam, drawing materials, collage elements, artificial flowers, ribbon, and decorative embellishments to create a sculptural contribution inspired by their answers. These participant made pieces will be assembled into a temporary collective altar installation within the exhibition, and reflect the group’s shared experiences of change, loss, resilience, belonging, and hope.

Participants are asked to bring with them to the workshop a COPY of a family photograph, a written memory, or a story about a meaningful object to incorporate into their artwork.
